The California State Park system has incredible state parks. Their miles of breathtaking coastline, remarkable wetlands, majestic redwood forests, beautiful deserts and colorful valleys provide a diversity of parks found nowhere else in the world. Volunteer host positions are available in over parks. This is a great opportunity to spend time in a wonderful location and meet fellow travelers. Host duties vary according to each park but generally include providing visitor information, staffing visitor centers and museums, maintenance projects and general housekeeping.
Most hosts work approximately 20 hours a week and, in exchange for those services, the hosts are provided with a campsite during their stay. Many parks have full hookups and are equipped with restrooms and showers. For those who prefer a more rustic setting, there are parks with little or no hookups or commercial amenities.
When applying as a host, make sure the location that interests you has the appropriate hookups for your needs. Anza-Borrego Desert State Park Enjoy beautiful weather, desert wildflowers and the possibility of spotting big horn sheep in this large campground and day use area located at the base of Borrego Palm Canyon.
Volunteers perform traditional host duties include registering campers, collecting fees, conducting camp checks, staffing the entrance station, selling firewood, and some housekeeping duties. This busy campground and day use area is a great winter host opportunity for active volunteers. Full hook-ups sites are provided for hosts and cell service is available. The campground has 10 sites with corrals for park visitors to camp with horses, as well as a day use area. There are many riding and hiking opportunities in the area and horse trails can be accessed directly from the camp. This semi-remote campground offers traditional host duties, including registering campers, collecting fees, answering questions, some light housekeeping and the opportunity to assist with special projects.
A full hook-up site is provided for the host. Vern Whitaker Horse Camp is located approximately 8 miles north of the town of Borrego Springs, including 3 miles of dirt road to access the camp. One month minimum stay required. The Millers give tours on weekends and some Monday holidays. They operate this magnificent machine, milling whole grain into fabulous flour. School groups visit the mill in the spring and fall. Duties will include dressing in period appropriate clothing providedworking closely with the millers, bagging flour, selling gift items, running a cash register and filling out daily able sales forms, cleaning the granary building and assisting with light housekeeping and grounds work.

Benicia State Recreation Area Enjoy the marshlands, grassy hillsides and rocky beaches along the narrowest portion of the Carquinez Strait while volunteering at Benicia State Recreation Area.
Host position is available for active and friendly individuals. This volunteer position assists with various aspects of park operations, including visitor services and maintenance work. The park host responds to visitor inquiries, cleans restrooms, closes gates, assists with park interpretive programs, and does light maintenance and litter pickup. RV site with full hookups provided. This coastal park is on the west side of Highway 1 and features access to a wilderness beach. No internet or satellite reception. Hosting opportunities available year-round. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park One RV site with water and electric hook-ups located in the parking area of a heavily-used day use area. Pumpout service for gray and black water provided once a week. No cell phone service, internet or satellite reception available.
It's located along the beautiful, rugged Big Sur Coast and offers hiking trails, scenic views, and two environmental campsites. Host duties include greeting and assisting visitors, trail monitoring, map and firewood sales, interpretation, and light facility maintenance.
Smaller rigs are preferred as there is limited turnaround area and requires backing in on a curved road over a narrow bridge. Hosts with larger rigs over 26' are advised to scout the location before applying. No pull-through. Hosting opportunities available for spring, summer and fall seasons. Approximately 40 minutes south of Carmel, this popular site campground offers hiking trails, river access, waterfalls, a Nature Center, a lodge and restaurant concession. Duties vary and can include camp checks, firewood sales, staffing the Nature Center, kiosk operation and interpretation.
Applications are not being accepted at this time. Bolsa Chica State Beach offers an extraordinary combination of oceanside recreation close to tidal wetlands wildlife. Host duties include camper registration, camp checks, light maintenance, providing public information, etc. The campground and yurt host position includes a full hook-up campsite in the beautiful upper Napa Valley. Work will be approximately hours a week. Duties will include selling firewood, assisting the staff with posting reservation information, assisting campers with general park information along with assisting staff with explanation of park rules and regulations using voluntary compliance techniques, light housekeeping in restrooms, campsites and yurts.
